Ohio Senate honors President James A. Garfield as a 2013 Great Ohioan, selected by the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board and the Capital Square Foundation

Garfield was born November 19, 1831, in Orange Township and served as a professor and president at Hiram College, Ohio State Senator, Union Army officer, and U.S. Representative for nine terms before being elected President in 1880

Garfield was shot by a disgruntled job seeker four months into his presidency and died on September 19, 1881

Garfield's home in Mentor was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, designated a National Historic Site in 1980, and transferred to National Park Service auspices in 2008

Senate directs the Clerk to transmit authenticated copies of the resolution to the Garfield family and the James A. Garfield National Historic Site
