Township boards of trustees may adopt resolutions requiring property owners, occupants, or persons in charge of land in unincorporated areas to remove snow and ice from abutting sidewalks within a reasonable timeframe specified in the resolution.

Resolutions may exempt individuals based on age, infirmity, disability, or extended absence.

Violations result in fines not to exceed $50 per day that the sidewalk remains covered with snow or ice.

Persons complying with township resolutions are protected from liability for personal injuries unless their conduct was willful and wanton.

Township boards may remove snow and ice themselves and charge expenses to the property owner, collecting fines and expenses through tax liens placed on the property by the county auditor.
