Permits high school students to choose taking a civics assessment instead of the American government end-of-course examination, beginning with the 2016-2017 school year.

The civics assessment must be identical to the civics portion of the naturalization test used by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Passing the civics assessment requires answering at least 60% of questions correctly, with students allowed unlimited retakes until passing.

Each school district board of education determines the method and manner of administering the civics assessment.

Students cannot substitute alternative assessments for end-of-course examinations in English language arts I and II, Algebra I, or geometry.
