Ohio Senate congratulates Brutus Buckeye, The Ohio State University mascot, on its 50th anniversary in 2015.

Students Ray Bourhis and Sally Huber created the mascot in 1965, debuting it at the OSU/Minnesota football game on October 30, and it was officially named Brutus Buckeye on November 18, 1965.

Brutus transitioned from the Block O student spirit organization to the OSU cheerleading program in 1975, became a separate position with its own tryout in 1981, and the university trademarked it in 1987.

The mascot appears at Ohio State sporting events, university activities, and community service events throughout Columbus and Central Ohio, winning the Capital One Mascot Challenge popular vote in 2003 and being inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2007.

Senate directs the Clerk to transmit authenticated copies of the resolution to The Ohio State University and Ohio news media.
