S.B. No. 275 Summary

• Expands authority of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) to select, order, and administer drugs other than anesthesia in hospitals, ambulatory surgical facilities, and hospital-owned entities during the immediate post-operative period.

• Requires facilities to grant CRNAs written credentials or clinical privileges authorizing drug selection and administration, with protocols established by the facility's medical director, nursing director, and pharmacy director or consulting pharmacist.

• Prohibits CRNAs from selecting controlled substances and limits drug administration to treating nausea, pain, and respiratory conditions related to anesthesia administration.

• Allows supervising physicians, podiatrists, or dentists to prohibit individual CRNAs from administering drugs for specific patients by documenting the determination in the patient's medical record.

• Amends pharmacy practice definitions to recognize CRNAs as prescribers to the extent of their authority under the new section 4723.484 of the Revised Code.
