Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission shall develop and conduct a 40-hour chief of police training course for newly appointed chiefs of police appointed on or after January 1, 2018.

Course topics must include diversity training with emphasis on historical perspectives and community-police relations, with courses offered at least semiannually at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy.

Newly appointed chiefs must complete the training within 6 months of appointment and shall receive compensation as if performing regular chief of police duties during attendance.

Newly appointed chiefs may request exemptions from portions of the course by submitting evidence of equivalent training within 10 calendar days of appointment, and deferrals are permitted for medical disability or other good cause.

State funds appropriated to the attorney general shall cover course costs, while the hiring entity shall pay for meals, lodging, and travel expenses.
