S.B. No. 61 Summary

• Authorizes certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) to select, order, and administer drugs other than anesthesia in specific settings (hospitals, ambulatory surgical facilities, and hospital-owned entities) in the immediate post-operative period, subject to established protocols.

• Requires facility medical directors, nursing directors, and pharmacy directors to establish protocols authorizing CRNAs to administer only non-controlled drugs for treating nausea, pain, or respiratory conditions related to anesthesia administration.

• Permits supervising physicians, podiatrists, or dentists to prohibit CRNAs from administering drugs to specific patients by documenting the determination in the patient's medical record.

• Amends the Board of Nursing's rulemaking authority to establish standards and procedures for delegation of drug administration authority and requires rules consistent with section 4723.484 governing CRNA drug authority.

• Updates pharmacy law definitions to recognize CRNAs as licensed health professionals authorized to prescribe or order drugs only to the extent of their authority under the new section 4723.484.
