Sub. H.B. 318 Summary

• Expands the definition of anesthesiologist assistants to clarify they assist anesthesiologists in developing and implementing anesthesia care plans, with authority to engage in activities specified in sections 4760.08-4760.10 of the Revised Code.

• Adds anesthesiologist assistants to the list of healthcare professionals authorized to direct licensed practical nurses, including those who can issue orders for respiratory care and authorize medication administration.

• Requires anesthesiologist assistants to practice only under direct supervision and in the immediate presence of a supervising anesthesiologist in hospitals or ambulatory surgical facilities, with written practice protocols.

• Authorizes anesthesiologist assistants to perform expanded clinical activities including anesthesia induction/maintenance, airway management, administering anesthetic drugs, obtaining informed consent, and directing nursing staff when authorized by law.

• Establishes reporting requirements for health care facilities and professional associations regarding disciplinary actions against anesthesiologist assistants and adds anesthesiologist assistants to pharmacy prescriber definitions for limited drug prescribing authority.
