Sub. H.B. No. 492 Summary

• Requires all athletic coaches at public schools and interscholastic-conference-regulated nonpublic schools to complete sudden cardiac arrest training annually and a student mental health training course upon each permit application or renewal.

• Coaches must complete mental health training approved by the department of mental health each time they apply for or renew a pupil-activity program permit under section 3319.303.

• Mental health training course may be combined with or part of another training course and must be completed anytime within the duration of the individual's new or renewed permit.

• Applies to all athletic activities including interscholastic athletics, school-sponsored contests, cheerleading, club sports, school-affiliated organization sports, and related practices and scrimmages.

• Extends the same mental health and cardiac arrest training requirements to STEM schools, science/technology/engineering/mathematics schools, and college-preparatory boarding schools operating in Ohio.
