S.B. No. 214 Summary

• Requires Ohio school districts to include instruction in Asian American history beginning in the 2022-2023 school year for grades kindergarten through twelve.

• Directs the superintendent of public instruction to develop a model curriculum covering Asian American contributions to government, arts, humanities, sciences, and economic/cultural/social/political development of the United States.

• Model curriculum must include the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and legal challenges to that internment, plus military service of the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II.

• Districts may determine the minimum instructional time for Asian American history and may utilize the state model curriculum, online programs, or other courses to meet this requirement.

• Amends sections 3313.60, 3314.03, 3326.11, and 3328.24 of the Revised Code to implement the requirement across traditional public schools, community schools, STEM schools, and college-preparatory boarding schools.
