Licensed therapy professionals in Ohio may use artificial intelligence for supplementary support tasks (client records, therapy notes, anonymized data analysis, organizing referrals) and administrative tasks (scheduling, billing, insurance claims) but not for therapeutic communication with clients

AI is prohibited from making independent therapeutic decisions, diagnosing clients, directly interacting with clients therapeutically, generating treatment plans without professional review, or detecting emotions or mental states

Therapists must obtain written informed consent specifying how AI will be used and execute HIPAA-compliant business associate agreements before using AI in therapy services

Covered professionals include psychologists, clinical counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists, chemical dependency counselors, behavior analysts, and other licensed therapy providers

Violations may result in fines up to $10,000 per violation imposed by the appropriate professional licensing board
