Townships with populations of 20,000 or more may increase their board of township trustees from 3 members to 5 members through a petition signed by 10% of voters from the most recent gubernatorial election, followed by voter approval at a general election

Two additional trustees would serve 4-year terms elected at the same general elections as the existing third trustee position

For 5-member boards, voting thresholds adjust proportionally: actions requiring two-thirds vote instead require three-fifths vote, and actions requiring at least two trustees instead require at least three trustees

Townships with 5-member boards may reverse the change back to 3 members through the same petition and election process; the board also automatically reverts to 3 members if population falls below 20,000

When a township with a 5-member board participates in a district or entity where all trustees serve on the governing body, only 3 trustees may vote while the other 2 serve as nonvoting members
