Students may choose to take a civics assessment instead of the American government end-of-course examination, beginning with the 2026-2027 school year

The civics assessment must be identical to the civics portion of the naturalization test used by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Students must answer at least 60% of questions correctly to pass; those who fail may retake the assessment until they obtain a passing score

Each school district board of education determines the method and manner for administering the civics assessment
