HB 2863 Summary

• School districts may include a parental education warning notification at least once yearly when providing enrollment and curriculum information to parents/guardians of students in grades 5-7.

• The notification must be posted on the school district and individual school websites (where available) and inform parents about the critical importance of middle school grades in preventing high school dropout and ensuring academic success.

• The notification shall include information about early dropout indicators, importance of early detection and intervention, patterns signaling problems, and how to provide appropriate supports to struggling students.

• The State Department of Education shall develop and provide cost-effective information meeting these requirements to school districts, including examples for designing and printing the notification, with materials posted on the Department website.

• The act becomes effective July 1, 2010, with an emergency clause allowing immediate implementation upon passage and approval.
