Hospitals cannot charge patients who are readmitted to the same hospital within 30 days of discharge until the State Department of Health conducts a review

The State Department of Health must review each readmission to determine whether it could have been prevented

If the Department determines the readmission was preventable, the hospital is prohibited from charging the patient for any services related to that readmission

If the Department determines the readmission was not preventable, the hospital may charge the patient for services rendered during the readmission
