SB 1381 Summary

• Requires all curriculum and materials used in sex education classes to be medically accurate before approval by school district superintendents.

• Defines "medically accurate" as materials based on scientific evidence, consistent with recognized scientific theory, peer-reviewed, and recognized as accurate by mainstream medical organizations (AMA, ACOG, APHA, AAP), government agencies (CDC, FDA, NIH), and scientific advisory groups.

• Maintains existing protections allowing parents to inspect sex education materials, receive prior written notification, and opt their children out of sex education classes or programs.

• Specifies that deliberately withholding information needed to protect life and health shall not be considered medically accurate.

• Effective date: November 1, 2010.
