Senate Bill 1641 Summary

• Requires peace officers certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) to complete 25 annual hours of continuing training, including 2 hours on mental health issues and 1 hour on Alzheimer's disease and related forms of dementia.

• Inactive peace officers who return to active duty after 5 or more years must complete 100 hours of refresher training within one year, including a minimum of 4 hours of mental health education.

• Tribal officers commissioned through cross-deputization agreements with Oklahoma law enforcement agencies must comply with the same training requirements as certified peace officers.

• Officers who fail to meet annual training requirements face suspension of their peace officer certification after written notice and reasonable time to comply; suspension is reported to district attorneys, insurance companies, and agency leadership.

• Effective date: November 1, 2010.
