Highway Patrol officers and other full-time Department of Public Safety law enforcement officers may obtain part-time law enforcement employment with other agencies during any furlough period imposed by the Commissioner of Public Safety

Officers who take part-time law enforcement work during furloughs are exempt from existing laws or department policies that would otherwise prohibit such outside employment

Previous restrictions on outside employment must be reinstated no later than two weeks after the furlough period ends, as determined by the Commissioner of Public Safety

Declared an emergency measure, meaning the law takes effect immediately upon passage and approval rather than following the standard effective date

Passed the Senate on March 2, 2010 and the House of Representatives on April 5, 2010
