Oklahoma State Senate recognizes and applauds the resilience of the Haitian people following the January 12, 2010, earthquake that killed over 100,000 people and affected more than three million.

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti with its epicenter just ten miles from the capital Port-au-Prince, causing 20% of structures to collapse and 80% of remaining structures to suffer serious damage.

Senate encourages Haitian people to stand strong and united as they rebuild their country with assistance from citizens throughout the world.

Resolution acknowledges Haiti's historical significance, noting the nation's successful slave uprising against Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804 that led to the Louisiana Purchase and formation of the modern United States.
