OK HB1979

Creates the "Oklahoma Freedom Trail Act" to recognize, document, and mark sites in Oklahoma associated with African-American history and the movement toward freedom.

Designates the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department as responsible for planning and administering the Trail, with input from the Oklahoma Historical Society, Film and Music Commission, and Department of Transportation.

Authorizes marking of Trail sites with permanent markers on highways or by adding information to existing highway signs, to be implemented during normal maintenance procedures.

Implementation is contingent upon the Tourism and Recreation Department securing private donations, contributions, gifts, grants, or other funding.

Becomes effective November 1, 2011.
