SB 1393 Summary

• Amends 11 O.S. Section 49-108 to standardize terminology, replacing "fire fighter" with "firefighter" throughout the statute.

• Allows volunteer firefighters appointed as paid firefighters who serve less than 10 years to receive pension benefits combining volunteer service (1/20 of volunteer pension per year) and paid service (1/20 of 1/2 average salary per year).

• Permits volunteer firefighters appointed as paid firefighters on or after May 15, 1992 who serve 10+ years to credit up to 5 years of volunteer time toward a 20-year paid service pension, with additional volunteer years calculated at 1/20 of volunteer pension.

• Establishes that volunteer firefighters appointed as paid firefighters before May 15, 1992 who serve 10+ years may credit all volunteer time toward a 20-year paid service pension.

• Adds new provisions allowing paid firefighters appointed as volunteer firefighters after the effective date to receive combined pension benefits and caps total credited service at 30 years.

• Becomes effective November 1, 2012.
