SB 1400 Summary

• Establishes the Oklahoma Legislative Badge of Bravery to be awarded to law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency responders who perform deeds of personal bravery or self-sacrifice involving risk of life.

• Requires incontestable proof of the brave deed and restricts eligibility to those employed by state, county, municipal, school, or tribal agencies who acted while on or off duty.

• Creates a nominating committee consisting of the Lieutenant Governor (or designee), Speaker of the House (or designee), President Pro Tempore of the Senate (or designee), and the chairs of the public safety committees in both chambers.

• Requires a majority vote of the nominating committee to forward nominees, and allows the Oklahoma Legislature to direct the Governor to award the badge through concurrent resolution during regular sessions only.

• Effective date: November 1, 2012.
