SB 1528 Summary

• Creates the "Home Schooling Act of 2012" establishing a framework for voluntary oversight of home schooling in Oklahoma.

• Prohibits state and local regulation of home schooling unless the parent, legal guardian, or custodial guardian requests that the school district provide oversight.

• Upon request for oversight, school districts must coordinate with parents to ensure children receive adequate education including curriculum comparable to public school standards and required instructional hours per Oklahoma Statutes Section 1-111 and 11-113.6 of Title 70.

• Requires the State Board of Education to promulgate rules for home schooling oversight and directs school districts to designate an education oversight coordinator.

• Effective July 1, 2012, with an emergency clause allowing immediate effect upon passage and approval.
