SB 1564 Summary

• Creates the Middle School Education Task Force until June 30, 2013, to examine ways to reform middle school education and prepare students for high school, college, and careers.

• Task force shall examine individualized instruction, college and career readiness curriculum, teacher professional development, reading instruction, mathematics and science education, testing methodology, and attendance barriers.

• Composition of 11 members: three appointed by Senate President Pro Tempore, three by House Speaker, three by Governor, one by Senate Education Committee Chair, and one by House Common Education Committee Chair.

• Members receive no compensation but may receive travel reimbursement; staff support provided by State Department of Education; meetings subject to Oklahoma Open Meeting Act.

• Effective date is July 1, 2012, with emergency clause for immediate implementation.
