SB 1607 Summary

• Directs the Oklahoma Water Resources Board to create 17 regional aquifer advisory groups to provide advice on groundwater protection and use within designated bedrock aquifer regions.

• Each advisory group shall consist of two residents from each county within an aquifer region, selected by county commissioners, serving four-year terms and eligible for reappointment.

• Aquifer advisory groups shall advise Regional Water Planning Groups and the Oklahoma Water Resources Board, meeting at least annually, and may conduct studies or make recommendations on groundwater-related issues.

• Members serve without compensation but may receive reimbursement for travel expenses paid by the Board; the Board is not required to spend agency funds on advisory groups unless specifically appropriated by the Legislature.

• Identifies 17 named aquifer regions including Ogallala, Arbuckle-Simpson, Vamoosa-Ada, North Canadian River, and others based on the Oklahoma Comprehensive Water Plan; effective November 1, 2012.
