SB 1797 Summary

• Creates the Commission for Educational Quality and Accountability effective January 1, 2013, with seven members including the Secretary of Education as chair, plus appointed members representing business, parents, school administrators, higher education, and classroom teachers.

• Transfers duties of the Education Oversight Board and Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation to the new Commission, with the teacher preparation functions transferring July 1, 2014.

• Renames the Office of Accountability to Office of Educational Quality and Accountability and places it under the new Commission's authority with requirement to demonstrate 15% cost savings through consolidation.

• Updates terminology throughout education statutes (70 O.S.) to reflect the Commission name changes effective on specified dates (January 1, 2013 and July 1, 2013-2014).

• Repeals the Education Oversight Board (Section 3-116) and several Oklahoma Teacher Preparation Act provisions (Sections 6-183, 6-188, 6-198-6-202.1, 6-205).
