SB 1848 Summary

• Requires redistricting of Supreme Court, Court of Criminal Appeals, and district courts to be as equal in population as practicable, while preserving minority districts in District 7 and District 14.

• Mandates redistricting be completed by July 1, 2014, with new district boundaries used for retention ballot elections in the 2014 General Election.

• Requires subsequent redistricting on or before September 1, 2021, following the Federal Decennial Census, and every 10 years thereafter using the same population equality standards.

• Directs the State Election Board to conduct court office elections using the new district boundaries established under this law.

• Effective date: November 1, 2012.
