SJR 58 Summary

• Urges the Governor, Oklahoma Water Resources Board, and relevant state and federal agencies to begin negotiations with federally recognized Indian tribes and nations claiming water rights in Oklahoma.

• Seeks to encourage cooperative agreements and discussion rather than lengthy and expensive legal proceedings regarding state water resources.

• Requires the Secretary of State to distribute copies of the resolution to the Governor, Secretary of Environment, and Chair of the Oklahoma Water Resources Board.

• Any cooperative agreement involving surface water and groundwater resources requires Oklahoma Legislature consent per state statute and compact or treaty provisions.
