HB 1117 Summary

• Amends 70 O.S. 2011, Section 1210.284 to add a public school nurse to the vision screening advisory committee established by the State Department of Health.

• The advisory committee now consists of one Oklahoma optometrist, one Oklahoma ophthalmologist, the State Commissioner of Health or designee, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or designee, one representative of a statewide blindness prevention organization, and one public school nurse.

• The advisory committee makes recommendations to the State Board of Health on vision screening standards, screener qualifications, trainer qualifications, and grounds for denying or revoking recognition of vision screeners and trainers.

• Requires parents or guardians of kindergarten, first, and third grade students to provide certification of vision screening within specified timeframes, with screenings conducted by personnel on the state registry.

• Effective date: November 1, 2013.
