HB 1380 Summary

• Amends 70 O.S. 2011, Section 11-105.1 to establish that sex education curriculum and materials shall have as a primary purpose the provision of medically accurate, factual information designed to reduce factors associated with unintended pregnancy.

• Requires school districts to make all sex education curriculum, supplementary materials, and related surveys available for parent inspection prior to student participation.

• Mandates prior written notification to parents or guardians of their right to inspect materials and their obligation to opt their child out of sex education classes or programs in writing.

• Prohibits requiring student participation in sex education classes or programs if a parent or guardian objects in writing; if such programs are part of a credit course, students may still be required to enroll but cannot be forced to participate in the sex education portion.

• Effective date: November 1, 2013.
