HB 1402 Summary

• Amends 11 O.S. 2011, Section 16-302 regarding the Oklahoma Town Meeting Act and municipal election procedures.

• Increases the population threshold for municipalities required to hold town meetings from 1,000 residents to 2,000 residents according to the latest Federal Decennial Census.

• Municipalities with fewer than 2,000 residents that are not governed by charter must elect officers and handle initiative/referendum questions at biennial or special town meetings, unless they adopt an ordinance to hold elections through the county election board.

• Municipalities that adopt such an ordinance must provide a copy to their county election board; if the ordinance is repealed, municipalities must also notify the election board.

• Becomes effective November 1, 2013.
