HB 1723 Summary

• Amends 21 O.S. Section 1272 to allow district judges, associate district judges, special district judges, and municipal judges with valid handgun licenses to carry firearms in courtrooms, provided their names appear on a list maintained by the Administrative Director of the Courts.

• Modifies 21 O.S. Section 1277 to clarify that the unlawful carry restrictions do not apply to judges and private investigators with firearms authorization acting within the course and scope of employment.

• Amends 21 O.S. Section 1289.23 to clarify that full-time peace officers may carry approved weapons anywhere in Oklahoma while on active duty or off-duty, and reserve peace officers may carry approved weapons when off-duty under specified conditions.

• Establishes that off-duty peace officers carrying handguns under the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act must comply with all provisions of that act and are subject to employer restrictions on the type and manner of firearm carry.

• Effective date: November 1, 2013.
