HB 1871 Summary

• Amends the definition of "peace officer" in Oklahoma law to include tribal law enforcement officers in addition to sheriffs, police officers, and federal law enforcement officers

• Authorizes Bureau of Indian Affairs law enforcement officers and tribal law enforcement officers certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training to enforce state laws on federally-held trust lands

• Allows such officers to exercise state police powers on lands held in trust by the United States for federally recognized Indian tribes or tribal members

• Preserves jurisdiction granted to tribal officers under cross-deputization agreements between state, local, or federal governmental agencies

• Effective date: November 1, 2013
