HB 2052 Summary

• Amends 70 O.S. 2011, Section 1210.229-6 to allow school districts to develop and implement character education programs in any single grade or combination of grades from prekindergarten through twelfth grade.

• Deletes obsolete language requiring character education programs to begin in the 2006-2007 school year.

• Requires the State Department of Education to provide technical assistance, approved research-based character education programs, a character education honor roll, and a character education reading list to school districts via an Internet website.

• Authorizes the State Board of Education to award grants of $1,000 each to up to ten school districts for pilot projects that align character education with state curriculum in reading, mathematics, science, or social studies to demonstrate how character education teaches life skills leading to career readiness.

• Effective July 1, 2013, with an emergency declaration for immediate effect upon passage and approval.
