HB 2228 Summary

• Establishes the "Protect Against Pedophiles Act" to allow school boards to request national criminal history record checks for prospective volunteers who have direct contact with students

• School districts must pay the criminal history search fee (not to exceed $50 or actual cost, whichever is less), with fees deposited in the OSBI Revolving Fund

• After a prospective volunteer passes an initial background check, no additional checks are required unless mandated by board of education policy

• Applies to parents, guardians, and other individuals volunteering in school capacities involving direct student contact, with exceptions for extenuating time-constraint circumstances

• Becomes effective November 1, 2013
