SB 185 Summary

• Amends 70 O.S. 2011, Section 11-105.1 to require sex education curriculum and materials to provide "medically accurate, factual information that is age-appropriate and designed to reduce risk factors and behavior associated with unintended pregnancy."

• Maintains existing parental rights by requiring prior written notification to parents/guardians about sex education programs and their right to opt their children out of participation.

• Requires school district superintendents or designees to approve all sex education curriculum, materials, and surveys related to sexual behavior or attitudes before classroom use.

• Specifies that curriculum must include but not be limited to abstinence education as a component of the medically accurate information provided.

• Takes effect July 1, 2013, with an emergency declaration allowing immediate implementation upon passage and approval.
