SB480 Summary

• Restricts sheriffs and peace officers' duties to transport persons for mental health examination and emergency detention, excluding those voluntarily committed

• Allows county sheriffs to enter into Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services for additional transportation services beyond baseline law enforcement responsibilities

• Entitles sheriffs and peace officers to reimbursement from the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services for personnel costs associated with required transportation services

• Permits the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to contract with private agencies, ambulance services, security companies, or other law enforcement agencies for transportation between facilities

• Takes effect November 1, 2013
