SB 486 Summary: Oklahoma 9/11 G.I. Bill

• Creates the "Oklahoma 9/11 G.I. Bill" providing tuition and fee waivers at state-supported technology centers and Oklahoma State System of Higher Education institutions for 100% disabled veterans and their families whose injuries occurred after September 11, 2001.

• Extends waiver benefits to surviving spouses and children of military members killed in action or in the line of duty after September 11, 2001, who had Oklahoma as their home of record.

• Requires eligible dependents to enroll before age 21 and provide proof of disability status from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or proof that Oklahoma was the military member's home of record.

• Amends existing law to grant in-state tuition status to students eligible for Post 9/11 G.I. Bill benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

• Effective date July 1, 2013, with emergency provisions for immediate implementation upon passage and approval.
