HB 1105 Summary

• Prohibits drivers from using electronic communication devices (cell phones, PDAs, portable computers) to converse, write, send, or read text-based messages while operating a motor vehicle in school zones, repair/maintenance/construction zones, or within 500 feet of an intersection

• Allows use of electronic devices only with hands-free capability in these restricted areas

• Establishes a misdemeanor penalty of up to $500 fine and/or up to 30 days imprisonment for violations

• Exempts authorized emergency vehicle operators acting in official capacity and FCC-licensed radio frequency device operators from the restriction

• Effective date: November 1, 2013
