HB1373 Summary

• Creates the Alimony Guidelines Task Force to examine whether standardized guidelines for determining alimony in divorce proceedings would be equitable and effective.

• Task Force composed of 12 members: 5 appointed by Senate President Pro Tempore (including 2 family court judges, 2 family law attorneys with 10+ years experience, and 1 divorced party); 5 appointed by House Speaker (including 1 law professor specializing in family law, 1 family court judge, 2 family law attorneys with 10+ years experience, and 1 divorced party); 2 appointed by Governor (both family law attorneys with 10+ years experience).

• Members serve at pleasure of appointing authorities with vacancies filled by original appointing authority; quorum is a majority of members; President Pro Tempore and Speaker each designate a cochair.

• Task Force must convene first meeting by January 15, 2014, and submit findings and recommendations by December 31, 2014, including proposed legislation if applicable; members receive no compensation or travel reimbursement.

• Effective date: November 1, 2013.
