HB2425 Summary - Jeffrey Alert Act

• Creates the "Jeffrey Alert Act" establishing a statewide alert system for missing persons with mental illness, administered by the Department of Public Safety in cooperation with state and local agencies.

• Requires the Commissioner of Public Safety to adopt rules and procedures for alert activation, including verification that a person is missing and poses a credible threat to their own safety and health.

• Local law enforcement agencies must obtain documentation of the person's mental illness diagnosis and provide identifying information to media outlets and the public for safe recovery.

• Missing person must be reported to the National Crime Information Center immediately upon alert issuance, with alerts terminated when the person is located or a Department-determined notification period ends.

• Effective November 1, 2014.
