HB 2921 Summary

• Recognizes Native American languages as a language art subject in Oklahoma public schools

• Allows Native American language classes to count toward core curriculum requirements and receive the same credit as world language courses

• Permits teaching of Native American languages by qualified teachers holding valid Oklahoma teaching certificates or by teachers with State Board of Education Native American Language certificates who either qualify for Alternative Placement Teaching Certificates or work under supervision of a highly qualified content teacher

• Becomes effective July 1, 2014, with an emergency clause for immediate implementation upon passage and approval
