Senate Bill 1143 Summary

• Amends 70 O.S. 2011, Section 24-106 regarding the United States Flag in public schools.

• Requires all public school students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag once every school week.

• School districts must own and display a United States Flag either inside or outside each classroom building.

• Requires instruction in the history and etiquette relating to the United States Flag in one or more grades in every school district.

• Students who do not wish to participate in the pledge are not required to do so; schools must post notice of this in a conspicuous place.

• Effective date: July 1, 2014, with an emergency declaration for immediate implementation.
