Senate Bill 1180 Summary

• Authorizes school districts to educate students about the history of traditional winter celebrations and permits staff and students to offer traditional holiday greetings including "Merry Christmas," "Happy Hanukkah," and "happy holidays"

• Allows school districts to display scenes or symbols associated with traditional winter celebrations (such as menorahs, nativity scenes, or Christmas trees) if the display includes symbols from more than one religion OR one religion plus at least one secular symbol

• Prohibits holiday displays from including messages that encourage adherence to a particular religious belief

• Creates new law codified as Section 24-156 of Title 70 of the Oklahoma Statutes

• Effective July 1, 2014, with an emergency declaration making it effective upon passage and approval
