ENGR. S. B. NO. 1458 Summary

• Amends 47 O.S. 2011, Section 14-111 to authorize Department of Public Safety officers, Corporation Commission officers, sheriffs, and salaried deputy sheriffs to stop and weigh vehicles on roads and highways using portable or stationary scales.

• Requires that portable scale operators allow drivers to move vehicles to the most level weighing area within two miles of the initial stop.

• Permits officers to require drivers to unload excess cargo at the weighing site to comply with maximum weight limits, with exceptions for livestock, perishable goods, and weather-sensitive merchandise.

• Adds new subsection restricting county sheriffs and deputy sheriffs enforcing size and weight provisions from exceeding authority standards established by the Department of Public Safety.

• Becomes effective July 1, 2014, with an emergency clause allowing immediate implementation upon passage and approval.
