SB 1830 Summary

• Creates the "Oklahoma Student Veteran Leave of Absence Act of 2014" to provide protections for student-veterans called to active duty.

• Requires institutions within The Oklahoma State System of Higher Education to grant a leave of absence to students who are members of the active uniformed military services called to active duty.

• Allows students to either withdraw from classes and receive a full refund without penalty to admission status, grade point average, or institutional financial aid, or receive an incomplete grade if they completed at least 50% of coursework before being called to active duty.

• Limits the total leave of absence to a cumulative maximum of 5 years.

• Permits students to bring legal action in district court against institutions for noncompliance, seeking actual and compensatory damages; effective July 1, 2014, with emergency clause for immediate effect upon passage and approval.
