SB 442 Summary

• Prohibits operating a motor vehicle on Oklahoma streets or highways while using a cellular telephone or electronic communication device to compose, send, or read text messages while the vehicle is in motion.

• Violators face fines and court costs not to exceed $500.00 upon conviction.

• Exempts law enforcement, emergency vehicle operators, amateur radio operators with valid FCC licenses, and use of communication devices solely to report emergency situations to emergency responders.

• Authorizes municipalities to enact ordinances enforcing the same prohibition with identical or lesser penalties and fines than state law.

• Effective date: November 1, 2013.
