All individual and group health insurance policies providing medical and surgical benefits must provide equal coverage to individuals under age 18 diagnosed with autistic disorder as those without the diagnosis.

Health benefit plans issued or renewed on or after November 1, 2015, must cover diagnosis and treatment of autistic spectrum disorder when medically necessary and ordered by a licensed physician, psychologist, or clinical social worker.

Covered treatments include behavioral therapy, prescription drugs, psychiatric services, psychological services, physical therapy, speech and language pathology services, and occupational therapy provided by licensed professionals.

"Autistic disorder" is defined as a neurological disorder marked by severe impairment in social interaction, communication, and imaginative planning with onset during the first three years of life.

The act does not require insurers to provide autism-related benefits and becomes effective November 1, 2015.
