HB 1481 Summary

• Modifies the State Board of Examiners of Certified Courtroom Interpreters composition and removes the restriction limiting board members to two successive terms.

• Authorizes the Board to conduct criminal history background checks on applicants and charge a Supreme Court-approved fee for the check.

• Allows the Supreme Court to promulgate rules establishing different certification levels (Certified and Registered Courtroom Interpreters) and authorizing alternative examination standards consistent with national certification standards.

• Modifies enrollment procedures for interpreters holding out-of-state or federal certifications and those holding national entity certifications, requiring Supreme Court approval of associated fees.

• Authorized certified courtroom interpreters to use the abbreviation "C.C.I." and registered courtroom interpreters to use "R.C.I." after their names; eliminates the status of certified translator and becomes effective November 1, 2015.
