HB 1841 Summary

• Establishes the "Oklahoma Civics Education Initiative Act" authorizing Oklahoma school districts to create civics education programs for enrolled students.

• Designates the program purpose as preparing students to become informed, responsible, engaged, and literate citizens.

• Allows civics programs to incorporate administration of a test that is the same or similar to the United States Citizenship Test required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

• Permits school districts to integrate the civics program into one or more existing courses or establish it as a separate program, with students receiving elective credit for separate programs if outcomes meet State Board of Education subject matter standards.

• Becomes effective November 1, 2015.
